Fourth Quarter Notes

All English classes will spend the majority of the fourth quarter preparing for the End of Course test during the week of May 3. We will use computers in class each week to access the Discovery Education Thinklink program, and students will also need to complete on-line practice at home by going to assignments.discoveryeducation.com and entering the correct codes. Students will also read  the play Twelve Angry Men, by Reginald Rose. In addition, Honors students will read the graphic novel, Persepolis, and complete in-class research projects on Islam and Iranian history.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back students! I hope you all enjoyed a relaxing Christmas Break and are ready for a challenging second semester.

Standard English: We will begin the semester with a review of basic persuasive writing techniques in preparation for the larger research paper project that will be completed during the nine weeks. Toward the middle of the nine weeks, we will begin reading Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare. Although the play is in the textbook, I encourage all students to purchase a No Fear Shakespeare version of the play as it aides in comprehension and is more convenient to carry.

Honors English: We will spend the first few weeks finishing Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. The unit will culminate with the creation of a comic book in addition to a short answer/essay test. The novel will be followed by the research paper and Julius Caesar.

All students are encouraged to work diligently to meet deadlines and make time after school for tutoring if needed.

October Update

All Standard English students should have purchased a copy of Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton by now. The book was available for purchase in class last week for $11.25. We will begin the novel next week. Parents, please encourage your students to keep up with their outside reading!

Honors students should have read through Chapter 21 of Cry, the Beloved Country by today and should expect a reading quiz. Honors students are also working in groups on writing their own parodies which will be due on Friday.

Etymology students have a major test tomorrow. We will begin projects on Greek scientific bases next week.
